Here at Nassau Downs OTB, we believe that betting on thoroughbred and harness racing is one of the most enjoyable and potentially profitable forms of gambling in existence.
Unlike many other forms of gambling, such as casino gambling, horse race wagering is pari-mutuel betting, which literally means the gambler is betting against other gamblers not the house. The uniqueness of pari-mutuel betting lies in the fact that the gambling public itself determines the payoff odds, with the winning bettors earning the money lost by the losing bettors. (e.g., if many people have bets on the winner of a race, then the payoff will be low because the money in the betting pool will be divided amongst many winners instead of just a few winners when longshots win). Pari-mutuel wagering is the accepted betting method at all major horse racing tracks throughout the world.
